This feels like the Africa many people imagine before their first safari. Small, beautifully understated and wonderfully immersive, it offers outstanding guiding and some of Botswana's finest wildlife without ever losing its intimate character
Classic safari traditions and remarkable wildlife come together at Selinda Explorers Camp, an intimate tented retreat beside Botswana's beautiful Selinda Spillway.
With just four guest tents positioned beneath ebony and mopane trees, Selinda Explorers Camp captures the spirit of Africa's early safari expeditions while offering access to one of northern Botswana's richest wildlife habitats. The Selinda Spillway attracts exceptional concentrations of elephant, predators and plains game, creating a safari where every day is shaped by the rhythm of the surrounding wilderness rather than a fixed itinerary.
Accommodation comprises three spacious canvas guest tents together with a two-bedroom family tent, all thoughtfully positioned for privacy beneath the riverside woodland. Campaign-style furnishings, handcrafted details and natural fabrics create a warm, understated atmosphere that reflects the camp's explorer heritage without compromising comfort.
Each tent features generous sleeping and dressing areas, an en-suite bathroom and a private veranda overlooking the surrounding bush. Designed to immerse guests in the landscape, they provide a peaceful retreat where birdsong, distant lion calls and passing wildlife become part of everyday life.
Dining is relaxed, flexible and centred around the day's activities. Bush breakfasts, leisurely lunches and candlelit dinners are prepared using fresh seasonal ingredients and served beneath canvas, around the fire or in carefully chosen locations out in the wilderness. Attentive service and an excellent selection of wines complete an experience that feels welcoming rather than formal.
Selinda Explorers Camp is perfectly suited to travellers who enjoy an active safari. Early morning and afternoon game drives explore the varied landscapes surrounding the Selinda Spillway, where experienced guides follow wildlife movements through woodland, open plains and permanent water in search of exceptional sightings.
The area is renowned for its healthy populations of lion, leopard, African wild dogs and cheetah, together with large herds of elephant and buffalo. Giraffe, zebra, sable, roan and eland are all encountered here, while prolific birdlife makes every outing rewarding regardless of the season.
Guided walks form an important part of the experience, offering the opportunity to appreciate the bush from a completely different perspective. Accompanied by licensed walking guides, guests learn to interpret tracks, behaviour and the intricate relationships that make this ecosystem so remarkable.
When seasonal floodwaters return to the Selinda Spillway, canoeing offers a peaceful way to explore the channels, drifting quietly past hippos, waterbirds and elephants gathering along the banks. Night drives reveal an entirely different world after dark, while seasonal fishing and scenic helicopter flights provide even more ways to experience this extraordinary landscape.
The Selinda Spillway changes dramatically with the seasons, creating an ever-evolving safari. During the dry months, vast numbers of elephants gather along the river system and predator activity reaches its peak, while the arrival of seasonal floodwaters transforms the landscape into a network of channels that can be explored by canoe. Every visit offers a different perspective on this remarkable wilderness.
Selinda Explorers Camp occupies a peaceful setting beside the Selinda Spillway within Botswana's private Selinda Reserve. Combining riverine woodland, permanent water and open grasslands, it provides an exceptional base for discovering one of Africa's most rewarding wildlife destinations.
