Our View

Water rather than wheels defines the experience here, creating an intimate Okavango safari that feels wonderfully peaceful, deeply immersive and unlike anywhere else in Botswana.

Water shapes every moment at Sitatunga Private Island, an intimate safari retreat in Botswana's Okavango Delta where winding channels, papyrus-lined waterways and remarkable birdlife create one of Africa's most distinctive wilderness experiences.

Unlike the classic game-drive safaris of northern Botswana, life here revolves around the Delta itself. Hidden channels, floating reed beds and permanent waterways support an extraordinary ecosystem that is home to the elusive sitatunga antelope, thriving populations of red lechwe and one of the richest collections of birdlife anywhere in Africa. Days unfold at a gentler pace, following the rhythm of the water while exploring landscapes that remain inaccessible to conventional safari vehicles, revealing a quieter and altogether different side of the Okavango.

Lodging

Accommodation is limited to just two spacious guest suites, ensuring an exceptionally private atmosphere throughout the island. Raised on timber walkways above the wetlands, each suite draws inspiration from the traditional woven fishing baskets used by local communities for generations, creating architecture unlike anything else in the Great Plains collection.

Warm timber, natural fibres, handcrafted furnishings and generous indoor and outdoor living spaces blend naturally with the surrounding landscape, while private plunge pools and expansive verandas provide uninterrupted views across the waterways.

Dining

As a member of Relais & Châteaux, Sitatunga Private Island places outstanding cuisine at the centre of every stay. Menus showcase fresh seasonal ingredients prepared by Executive Chefs and are served wherever the day naturally leads, from leisurely breakfasts overlooking the Delta to relaxed lunches between excursions and elegant dinners beneath Botswana's night sky. Private dining on your own deck can also be arranged, while attentive yet understated service allows every meal to feel personal.

Safari Experience

Sitatunga Private Island offers one of the Okavango Delta's most distinctive water-based safaris. Exploring by flat-bottomed motorboat provides exceptional access to the Delta's permanent channels, allowing wildlife to be observed quietly from water level, while traditional mokoro excursions drift silently through narrow reed-lined waterways that larger boats cannot reach.

Guided walks reveal the remarkable diversity of the islands themselves, introducing guests to the intricate relationship between the Delta's wildlife, plants and seasonal floodwaters.

Wildlife encounters are shaped by this unique environment. The rare sitatunga antelope, perfectly adapted to life within the wetlands, is the reserve's signature species, while red lechwe are frequently encountered moving through the floodplains. Hippos, crocodiles, elephants and buffalo are regular visitors, with predators occasionally appearing along the islands as water levels shift.

Photography is a particular highlight, with specially designed boats, professional camera equipment available for guest use and exceptional opportunities to photograph wildlife and birds from perspectives found nowhere else in Botswana. Seasonal catch-and-release fishing and scenic helicopter flights provide further ways to experience this remarkable corner of the Delta.

Wildlife & Seasons

The permanent waters surrounding Sitatunga Private Island create rewarding wildlife viewing throughout the year, although each season reveals a different character. Rising floodwaters transform the Delta into an immense network of navigable channels, attracting breeding waterbirds and concentrating wildlife around the islands. Birdwatchers are particularly well rewarded, with fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, jacanas and countless other wetland species thriving here, while changing water levels continually reshape both the landscape and the wildlife experiences available throughout the year.

Location

Sitatunga Private Island occupies a remote private reserve within the northern Okavango Delta, surrounded entirely by permanent waterways and accessible only by boat. Its secluded position creates a safari unlike anywhere else in Botswana, where the journey is measured not by dusty tracks but by quiet channels, open lagoons and the ever-changing rhythm of one of Africa's greatest wetland wildernesses.
