Our View

This is far more than a traditional safari. Watching elephants beneath Kilimanjaro, sleeping under the stars and exploring on foot, horseback or by helicopter makes every day feel completely different from the last.

Framed by magnificent views of Mount Kilimanjaro, ol Donyo Lodge combines exceptional wildlife, remarkable landscapes and one of Kenya's most varied safari experiences.

Set within the vast Maasai-owned Mbirikani Conservancy between Amboseli, Tsavo and Chyulu Hills National Park, the lodge occupies an extraordinary wilderness where lava fields, rolling savannah, ancient woodlands and dramatic granite kopjes create a landscape unlike anywhere else in East Africa. The sheer diversity of habitats, together with remarkably low visitor numbers, allows guests to experience Kenya from an entirely different perspective.

Lodging

Accommodation comprises eight individually designed Deluxe Pool Suites together with a spacious two-bedroom Sambu Suite for families and friends travelling together. Constructed from local stone and thatch, every suite blends effortlessly into the hillside while embracing uninterrupted views across the surrounding plains towards Mount Kilimanjaro.

Private plunge pools, generous indoor and outdoor living areas and beautifully appointed bathrooms create an atmosphere of understated luxury. One of ol Donyo's most memorable features is the rooftop star bed, allowing guests to spend the night beneath Africa's remarkable night skies while listening to the sounds of the wilderness below.

Dining

Dining reflects the lodge's Relais & Châteaux heritage, with imaginative menus showcasing fresh seasonal ingredients and an excellent selection of South African and international wines. Meals are served wherever the setting feels most appropriate, from relaxed breakfasts after sunrise safaris to lunches overlooking the plains and atmospheric dinners beneath the stars.

Private dining experiences, bush breakfasts and picnic lunches add further variety, while attentive yet unobtrusive service ensures every meal feels personal and beautifully paced.

Safari Experience

Few safari lodges in Africa offer such a remarkable range of experiences. Traditional game drives reveal elephant, buffalo, giraffe, lion, cheetah and abundant plains game, while experienced guides tailor every outing to wildlife movements and individual interests rather than following a fixed schedule.

Guided walks explore ancient lava fields, acacia woodland and the striking granite kopjes that define the Chyulu Hills, revealing tracks, plants and smaller wildlife often overlooked from a vehicle. Horse riding offers another unforgettable perspective, allowing experienced riders to approach wildlife quietly across the open plains, while guided mountain biking provides an exhilarating way to explore this vast landscape.

A complimentary scenic helicopter flight showcases the Chyulu Hills, Amboseli and, on clear days, the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro from the air. Guests can also visit nearby Maasai communities, local markets and village schools, adding a fascinating cultural dimension to the safari experience.

The lodge's open-air hide overlooking its busy waterhole provides exceptional opportunities to observe wildlife without leaving camp. As darkness falls, rooftop star beds transform the evening into an unforgettable experience, while professional Canon camera equipment, high-quality binoculars and custom-designed safari vehicles ensure photographers are equally well catered for.

Wildlife & Seasons

The semi-arid landscape supports excellent wildlife throughout the year, with elephant, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, eland and numerous predators regularly encountered across the conservancy. Seasonal rainfall brings fresh grazing to the plains, while the ever-present backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro gives every safari an unmistakable sense of place whatever the time of year.

Location

ol Donyo Lodge occupies a spectacular position within the Maasai-owned Mbirikani Conservancy, bordering Chyulu Hills National Park between Amboseli and Tsavo. This immense protected wilderness combines dramatic scenery, exceptional wildlife and authentic Maasai culture to create one of Kenya's most distinctive safari destinations.
