Our View
The Mara has no shortage of outstanding camps, but this one captures the spirit of a classic East African safari beautifully. Small in scale, superbly located and wonderfully relaxed, it's a place where the wildlife always takes centre stage.
Classic safari traditions and remarkable wildlife come together at Mara Expedition Camp, an intimate tented retreat on the edge of Kenya's legendary Maasai Mara.
Hidden beneath a grove of acacia trees overlooking an open valley, the camp enjoys a peaceful setting on private land with direct access to the Maasai Mara National Reserve and occasional game drives within the neighbouring Mara North Conservancy. Its location places guests in the heart of one of Africa's richest wildlife regions, renowned for exceptional predator sightings and the spectacular annual wildebeest migration.
Lodging
Accommodation comprises five spacious safari tents together with a two-bedroom family tent, all thoughtfully positioned for privacy beneath the trees. Inspired by East Africa's early safari expeditions, the interiors feature campaign furniture, rich leather, natural canvas and handcrafted details that create an atmosphere of understated elegance.
Each tent offers generous sleeping space, an en-suite bathroom and a private veranda overlooking the surrounding landscape. High canvas ceilings, excellent natural ventilation and comfortable furnishings ensure the focus remains firmly on the wilderness beyond rather than the accommodation itself.
Dining
Dining is shaped around the day's adventures, with early breakfasts before sunrise departures, picnic lunches in the bush and relaxed dinners served beneath the stars. Fresh seasonal ingredients, excellent wines and attentive service create an experience that feels refined without losing the relaxed spirit of a traditional safari camp.
Safari Experience
The Maasai Mara offers some of Africa's most consistently rewarding wildlife viewing, and Mara Expedition Camp is perfectly positioned to make the most of it. Early morning, afternoon and full-day game drives explore open plains, acacia woodland and river valleys where lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo and countless plains game are encountered throughout the year.
From July to October the Great Migration transforms the Mara into one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles, as vast herds of wildebeest and zebra cross into Kenya from the Serengeti. Outside the migration months, resident predators, healthy game populations and exceptional birdlife ensure every safari remains equally rewarding.
Guided nature walks provide the opportunity to experience the bush on foot, while hot air balloon safaris reveal the Mara at sunrise from an unforgettable perspective. Guests can also explore by bicycle across the plains surrounding the camp, creating a rare opportunity to experience the landscape in a completely different way.
Photography is particularly well catered for, with open-sided safari vehicles offering uninterrupted views, professional Canon camera equipment available for guest use and high-quality binoculars provided in every tent. Private guides and dedicated vehicles can also be arranged for guests seeking complete flexibility.
Wildlife & Seasons
The Maasai Mara delivers exceptional wildlife viewing throughout the year. Predator sightings are consistently outstanding, while seasonal rainfall transforms the plains from golden grasslands into lush grazing country. The annual migration brings immense herds of wildebeest and zebra, but even beyond this iconic event the reserve remains one of Africa's finest safari destinations.
Location
Mara Expedition Camp occupies a secluded position on private land bordering the Maasai Mara National Reserve, with additional access to the Mara North Conservancy. This superb location combines peaceful surroundings with easy access to one of the world's most celebrated wildlife landscapes.
