Samburu has a character all of its own, and Sasaab captures it beautifully. The scenery, the wildlife and the warmth of the Samburu people combine to create a safari that feels refreshingly different from anywhere else in Kenya.
Overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River in Kenya's rugged Samburu region, Sasaab combines striking Moroccan-inspired design with one of East Africa's most rewarding safari landscapes.
Occupying a hillside within the Westgate Community Conservancy, the lodge enjoys sweeping views across the river towards Samburu National Reserve. This remarkable corner of northern Kenya feels dramatically different from the Maasai Mara, where arid plains, rocky hills and acacia woodland provide sanctuary for rare northern species found nowhere else in the country.
Sasaab features seven spacious suites together with an impressive family suite, each measuring more than 100 square metres and thoughtfully positioned for complete privacy. Canvas, stone and handcrafted timber combine with soaring ceilings and open-fronted living spaces to create interiors that feel wonderfully light and connected to the surrounding landscape.
Every suite features a private plunge pool overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River together with an open-air bathroom, generous bedroom and shaded terrace. The family suite can also be reserved exclusively, making it an excellent choice for families or friends travelling together.
Dining celebrates fresh seasonal produce, much of it sourced from the lodge's own vegetable garden. Bush breakfasts, relaxed lunches, sundowners on rocky viewpoints and dinners beneath a canopy of stars all become memorable highlights, while warm Kenyan hospitality ensures every meal feels personal and unhurried.
Private dining experiences can also be arranged, allowing guests to enjoy the remarkable setting in complete seclusion.
Sasaab offers a wonderfully varied safari centred on the landscapes and wildlife of northern Kenya. Guided game drives explore both the Westgate Community Conservancy and neighbouring Samburu National Reserve, where elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah and large crocodiles thrive alongside the remarkable species that make Samburu unique.
The region is renowned for the Samburu Special Five — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and the elegant gerenuk — providing wildlife encounters found in very few other parts of Africa. Excellent birdlife and experienced local guides add further depth to every outing.
Beyond traditional game drives, guests can explore on guided walks, travel through the bush by camel, enjoy exhilarating ATV adventures or spend a night beneath the stars in the lodge's fly camp. Cultural visits with local Samburu communities offer a fascinating insight into one of Kenya's oldest pastoral traditions, while bush breakfasts and sundowners make full use of the spectacular scenery surrounding the lodge.
Time can also be spent unwinding beside the infinity pool, enjoying treatments at SpaSaab or simply watching wildlife from the comfort of your private plunge pool overlooking the river below.
Samburu delivers rewarding wildlife viewing throughout the year thanks to the life-giving Ewaso Nyiro River. The dry landscape naturally concentrates wildlife along the riverbanks, while seasonal rains bring fresh grazing and vibrant colours to the surrounding hills. The region's remarkable diversity of northern species ensures every safari feels refreshingly different from southern Kenya.
Sasaab occupies an elevated position within the Westgate Community Conservancy in Samburu, overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River and bordering Samburu National Reserve. Its remote setting combines exceptional wildlife, dramatic scenery and authentic cultural experiences in one of Kenya's most distinctive safari destinations.
