GrandeMar Suites

Just above the windmills of Astypalea’s Chora, Grandemar Suites is an intimate collection of only four luxury residences, combining private outdoor living and far reaching Aegean views with one of the island’s most recognisable villages almost on the doorstep.

Astypalea has a beauty all its own, with white houses climbing towards the Venetian castle and the famous line of windmills marking the approach to Chora. Grandemar places you right among it. The centre is only around 200 metres away, yet the elevated position opens everything out towards the sea, with the castle, town and Aegean forming a wonderful panorama from the terraces.

The architecture feels completely at home on the island. Brilliant white sculpted forms, rounded edges and simple geometric lines reinterpret traditional Cycladic building without losing its character, while the small scale keeps everything wonderfully personal. With just four residences, Grandemar feels much closer to having your own place on Astypalea than staying in a conventional hotel.

Rooms & Suites

The four Presidential Suites are individually named Grand, Merilo, Querini and Evropi, each conceived as a substantial private residence rather than simply somewhere to sleep. Generous living and dining areas make them particularly comfortable for longer stays, while terraces and balconies turn the extraordinary outlook across Chora and the sea into part of everyday life.

Inside, white and neutral tones are layered with natural textures, elegant fabrics and carefully chosen furnishings, creating interiors that feel polished without competing with the landscape outside. Kitchen facilities add genuine independence, particularly for families or friends sharing a residence, with grocery delivery available when an evening on the terrace sounds preferable to going out.

Private pools and hot tubs feature within the collection, giving the outdoor spaces an even greater sense of occasion. It is difficult to imagine a better backdrop for them than Astypalea’s whitewashed Chora climbing towards its hilltop castle.

Dining

Grandemar is made for guests who enjoy setting their own timetable. There is a coffee house for drinks and lighter moments during the day, while breakfast can be enjoyed in the privacy of your suite and the well equipped kitchens make anything from a quick lunch to dinner on the terrace perfectly straightforward.

Chora being so close changes the equation completely. Its tavernas, cafés and bars are just a short walk away, so dinner can become part of an evening wandering past the windmills and through the village rather than something that needs arranging in advance. On other nights, a bottle of wine, something picked up locally and that enormous view may be all that is required.

Experience

The outdoor pool provides a relaxed focal point during the day, but Astypalea itself is very much part of the experience at Grandemar. Pera Gialos and Livadi bring the sea within easy reach, while walking through Chora towards the Church of Panagia Portaitissa and the Venetian castle gives you some of the island’s most memorable views without needing to get into a car.

For days further afield, cycling, hiking, snorkelling, diving and fishing can all be arranged, with bicycles and cars available for exploring the island independently. Astypalea rewards that freedom, particularly when it leads to a quiet beach or a tiny taverna that was never part of the original plan.

Wellness

Wellness at Grandemar is deliberately personal, with massages, body treatments, facials and beauty therapies available without the formality of a large hotel spa. Treatments can slip easily into the day rather than becoming an event around which everything else has to be organised.

In truth, much of the restorative quality comes naturally from the setting. There is something wonderfully simple about returning from the beach, cooling off in the pool and watching Chora begin to glow as evening settles over the castle and windmills.
