Our View

Shila is one of the most individual little hotels we have found in Athens, and we love its beautiful lived in interiors, leafy courtyard and unmistakable feeling that you have been invited to stay in someone's extraordinary home.

Behind the doors of a late 1920s neoclassical residence in central Athens, Shila is an extraordinarily intimate six suite hotel where art, vintage design and the atmosphere of a private home create a world entirely its own.

Shila is difficult to place neatly into the usual hotel categories, and that is much of its appeal. The original proportions of the house remain, with high ceilings, tall windows and elegant architectural details forming a backdrop to interiors layered with old furniture, contemporary pieces, artwork, books and beautifully tactile fabrics. Objects feel collected rather than installed, giving the rooms the personality of somewhere that has evolved over time.

There is a wonderfully artistic sensibility throughout the house. Reading corners appear between the larger spaces, plants spill through the courtyard and the mood moves easily between faded grandeur and contemporary Athens. It feels personal and slightly theatrical, yet comfortable enough that the beauty of the interiors never gets in the way of actually living in them.

Rooms & Suites

Only six suites make up Shila, and each has been given its own identity. Attic Antique, La Boheme, Artist Atelier, The Dreamers, Romantic Dust and Garden Retreat are individual spaces rather than variations on a standard room, shaped by different proportions, furnishings, artwork and outlooks.

Some open towards the garden or inner courtyard, while others occupy more secluded corners of the house. Generous seating areas, carefully chosen textiles and beautifully finished bathrooms reinforce the residential character, with selected suites adding kitchen facilities and the flexibility of additional living space.

Dining

Breakfast arrives each morning as a basket of fresh produce, a simple ritual that suits Shila far better than a conventional dining room ever could. Guests can linger over it privately in their suite or find a favourite corner elsewhere in the house, allowing the morning to begin entirely at its own pace.

Athens then provides the wider table. Kolonaki's cafés and restaurants are close at hand, while the surrounding central neighbourhoods open up everything from contemporary Greek cooking to long established tavernas, wine bars and some of the city's most interesting new dining rooms.

Experience

The communal spaces are as important as the suites. A lush internal courtyard creates a green refuge at the heart of the residence, while the tranquil rooftop, lounges and reading nooks invite guests to treat the building as a home rather than retreating automatically to their room. Art exhibitions and intimate cultural gatherings add another layer to a hotel with creativity embedded in its character.

Outside, Athens is immediately accessible on foot. Syntagma, the National Garden and Museum of Cycladic Art are all nearby, while Kolonaki's galleries, boutiques and café culture make the surrounding streets particularly rewarding for an unhurried wander.

Wellness

Shila approaches wellbeing in the same personal way it approaches everything else, with self care woven into the wider experience rather than confined to a formal spa. The peaceful courtyard, rooftop and private spaces provide natural places to slow the pace, creating a welcome sense of retreat in the middle of Athens.

Where

The central location allows guests to experience Athens almost neighbourhood by neighbourhood, moving easily between Kolonaki, Syntagma and the city's major cultural landmarks before returning to the calm of the residence. That contrast between the intensity of Athens outside and the private world behind Shila's doors is one of the hotel's greatest pleasures.
