Our View
Vranas is one of those rare hotels where the building and location are reason enough to stay, and waking above Chania's Venetian Harbour with the lighthouse framed beyond the windows is something we recommend experiencing at least once.
Inside a sixteenth century Venetian residence on Chania's Old Harbour, Vranas Residenza Boutique Hotel is an exceptional four suite hideaway with grand proportions and uninterrupted views across the water to the Egyptian Lighthouse.
There is real history in these walls. The building dates from the Venetian occupation of Chania in the 1500s, and its restoration respects the scale and architectural presence of the original residence. Thick stone, soaring interiors and beautifully proportioned openings give the suites a sense of permanence, while bespoke furniture and carefully chosen contemporary pieces bring them comfortably into the present.
With only four suites, Vranas feels wonderfully private. Step outside and you are immediately among the narrow lanes, waterfront cafés and centuries of layered architecture that make Chania's Old Town so compelling, yet upstairs the mood changes completely. From the windows and balconies, the harbour becomes an ever changing panorama of boats, rooftops and water stretching towards the lighthouse.
Rooms & Suites
Each of the four suites has its own character and configuration, ranging from the Superior and Deluxe Sea View Suites to a substantial Two Bedroom Suite and the Penthouse with its private terrace and Jacuzzi. Generous living areas and high ceilings reinforce the feeling of staying in a historic residence, with the harbour views providing the visual focus throughout.
The Superior Sea View Suite adds a heated plunge pool and balcony, creating a particularly memorable private space above the Old Town. At the top of the building, the Penthouse terrace provides another perspective entirely, opening the experience to the sky and giving Chania's remarkable waterfront an appropriately dramatic backdrop.
Dining
Breakfast is served privately in the suite, an arrangement that feels perfectly suited to Vranas. Coffee and breakfast beside a window or balcony above the harbour allows the city to come slowly to life below, while the privacy of the residence remains intact.
For the rest of the day, Chania supplies one of Crete's richest dining scenes almost immediately outside the door. Harbour restaurants, tucked away tavernas and contemporary Cretan kitchens fill the surrounding streets, making evenings an opportunity to wander through the Old Town and choose a table according to the mood.
Experience
The pleasure of Vranas lies as much in stepping outside as staying in. Chania rewards aimless wandering, from the Venetian harbour and lighthouse to Ottoman buildings, hidden courtyards, old workshops and lanes that reveal another fragment of the city's long history around almost every corner.
The concierge can help shape days further afield, whether that means exploring western Crete, arranging transport or simply pointing towards a favourite local address. Bicycle hire is also available, while Nea Chora brings a sandy beach and waterfront tavernas within reach of the Old Town.
Wellness
Here, the restorative moments come with the privacy and scale of the suites themselves. A long morning over breakfast, time in the heated plunge pool or an evening Jacuzzi on the Penthouse terrace all make good use of a building where there is every reason to linger before heading back into the streets below.
Where
Vranas Residenza occupies one of Chania's most enviable addresses on Zampeliou Street, directly within the historic Old Town and facing the Venetian Harbour. Museums, galleries, shops and restaurants are woven into the surrounding lanes, giving guests the rare pleasure of staying within the history and everyday life of the city rather than simply visiting it.
