Mikro Papigo 1700 Hotel & Spa sits at the highest point of Mikro Papigo, arranged above the Vikos Gorge with wide views across the towers of Papigo, the surrounding forest and the deeper folds of Zagori.

The hotel is laid out as a small stone-built settlement rather than a single lodge, spreading across several levels in a way that mirrors the structure of the village itself. Restored buildings dating back to 1700 are combined with later additions, all held together by the same local materials, slate roofs and stepped positioning that allow the property to sit naturally on the slope.

Inside, the mountain character is kept intact, but the spaces are given a sharper edge through a carefully chosen mix of contemporary furnishings and well-known design pieces, which gives the hotel a more individual identity than a standard rustic retreat.

Staying

The 15 rooms and suites are all arranged differently, with layouts shaped by the original buildings and by their position within the settlement. Views vary between forest, mountain and gorge, while features such as fireplaces, jacuzzis and stronger frontage in the higher room types give certain categories more presence without breaking the overall character of the property.

Suites such as the Jacuzzi Suite with Gorge View and the Master Suite carry more of that distinction, but even the smaller rooms keep the same sense of enclosure and mountain warmth. Stone, wood and heavier textures are used consistently throughout, giving the accommodation a grounded feel that suits both the altitude and the seasonality of the setting.

Dining is centred around Veranda at 1700, where the kitchen leans into Zagori cooking built from local produce, free-range ingredients and the kind of dishes that belong naturally to this landscape. Greek breakfast is given proper weight here too, with homemade sweet and savoury pies, seasonal preserves, local dairy and herbal drinks served in a way that feels rooted in the region rather than generic to a mountain hotel.

The restaurant opens onto panoramic views, while the adjoining lounge and bar are anchored by fireplaces that become central to the atmosphere later in the day. Drinks, quieter corners and the shift from daylight to evening all feel part of the same setting, rather than split into separate spaces with different moods.

Experience

The stay is closely tied to the landscape beyond the hotel, with hiking routes beginning directly from the property towards Drakolimni, the Vikos-Aoos National Park and the deeper mountain trails of the region. Walking, cycling, horse riding and cultural exploration all sit naturally within the experience here, while the hotel itself works best as a base from which to move through Zagori rather than as a self-contained mountain resort cut off from it.

Wellness

The spa provides a more enclosed counterpoint to the terrain outside, with an indoor heated pool, sauna, hammam, hot tub and treatment areas forming a proper wellness space rather than a token add-on. After time spent on the trails or moving between villages, it gives the hotel an added layer of comfort that carries real weight in a setting like this.

Where

Located within Mikro Papigo itself, the hotel is well placed for exploring the wider Zagori region, including the Vikos Gorge, nearby stone villages, mountain paths and the routes leading deeper into the Vikos-Aoos National Park. Access begins before arrival too, with luggage transferred from the village parking area near St Taxiarchis Church, around 130 metres from the property.
