Kokkini Porta Rossa

Behind the medieval walls of Rhodes Old Town, Kókkini Porta Rossa is an adults only retreat of just six suites within a restored fourteenth century knight’s residence, where exceptional hospitality and the stories of the building are as important as the beauty of the rooms.

Rooms & Suites

The six suites are named Katina, Orhan, Michalis, Irini, Deniz and Gülbin, each with its own layout and personality dictated by the architecture of the old residence. Stone, timber and historic details are mixed with colourful fabrics, individual pieces of furniture and artwork rather than repeated to a standard hotel formula.

Comfort has been considered just as carefully. Coco-Mat mattresses, a choice of pillows and generous bathrooms sit comfortably alongside the older architectural details, with spa baths or hydromassage showers appearing across the collection and selected suites adding their own outdoor spaces.

The result feels much closer to being invited into an extraordinary private home than checking into a conventional city hotel. Every suite has something different to notice, and the small scale means choosing a room becomes part of the experience rather than simply choosing a view.

Dining

Breakfast is one of the great pleasures of Kókkini Porta Rossa. Prepared each morning from fresh local ingredients, it arrives as a succession of small courses inspired by Rhodes, the eastern Mediterranean and the wider region, with the stories behind the dishes forming part of the meal.

It is best enjoyed slowly in the garden, where breakfast can become a leisurely start to the day rather than something squeezed in before sightseeing. The emphasis on regional flavours makes it a particularly lovely introduction to Rhodes before stepping outside to explore the old town.

Later in the day, complimentary wine and refreshments bring guests back together in the garden or salon. Dinner is left to the restaurants beyond the front door, helped enormously by thoughtful recommendations from hosts who know Rhodes intimately and are clearly delighted to share it.

Experience

There is a generosity to the hospitality that goes well beyond the usual concierge relationship. Recommendations are tailored to individual interests, daily itineraries can be suggested and practical touches such as beach mats, towels and water are provided for days spent exploring the coast.

Evenings in the courtyard capture the character of the place particularly well. The garden is softly lit, wine is poured and occasionally the piano joins the conversation, creating the sort of spontaneous, convivial atmosphere that a hotel with dozens of rooms could never manufacture.

Rhodes Old Town then begins immediately outside. The Street of the Knights, Palace of the Grand Master, tiny lanes, squares and centuries of Byzantine, Ottoman and medieval history can all be explored on foot, making it easy to wander without a plan and simply see where the streets take you.

Relaxation here comes from the intimacy of the surroundings rather than a conventional resort spa. Kókkini Porta Rossa sits within the walls of Rhodes Medieval Town, placing some of the island’s greatest historic sights within an easy walk. The Street of the Knights, Palace of the Grand Master, Kahal Shalom Synagogue and the harbour are all close by, yet once the old wooden door closes behind you, the garden feels like a private world of its own.
