Mystique, A Luxury Collection Hotel

Carved into Oia’s caldera cliffs, Mystique, a Luxury Collection Hotel, is a collection of 41 suites and villas where sculptural Cycladic architecture, two pools and uninterrupted views towards the volcano capture Santorini at its most elemental.

Mystique seems to emerge from the cliff itself. Curving walls follow the volcanic rock, cobbled pathways thread between different levels and terraces appear almost organically above the caldera. The architecture has the softness of traditional Santorini cave houses, interpreted with natural stone, pale plaster and bespoke pieces shaped by local craftsmanship.

The recent interiors have brought a more contemporary confidence without losing that connection to the island. Rooms & Suites

Just 41 suites and villas are arranged along the cliff, each opening onto its own terrace and the caldera. Vibrant, Aura, Wet Allure and All 2 Senses Suites gradually increase the sense of space and indulgence, with the cave shaped interiors creating bedrooms and living areas that feel wonderfully sheltered from the bright Santorini landscape outside.

The villas take privacy further. Secrecy, Mystery and Holistic Villas provide more expansive retreats for settling into the island at your own pace, with generous outdoor areas making the most of Mystique’s remarkable position. Across every category, the relationship between interior, terrace and view is beautifully judged.

Dining

Lure is one of Mystique’s most memorable spaces, following the curves of the cliff above the caldera with a menu rooted in Santorini’s produce and culinary heritage. The emphasis on clean flavours and carefully sourced ingredients feels particularly appropriate on an island with such distinctive tomatoes, capers, fava and volcanic wines.

Charisma brings a more relaxed mood beside the infinity pool for breakfast and lunch, while Circe and Lure bars carry the hotel into the evening. Private dining on the Aegean Balcony turns the caldera into your dining room, but the 150 year old Secret Wine Cave is perhaps the most atmospheric experience of all, providing a fascinating introduction to the wines grown in Santorini’s volcanic soil.

Experience

Two swimming pools are woven into the descending levels of the hotel, their edges seemingly disappearing into the Aegean below. Days naturally slow around them, punctuated by lunch, a walk into Oia or another hour spent on your own terrace watching boats trace tiny lines across the caldera.

Mystique is also an excellent base for discovering the landscape that surrounds it. Hiking reveals the dramatic spine of the caldera from a completely different perspective, while sailing puts you down at sea level beneath the cliffs. Santorini’s vineyards deserve time of their own, particularly after an introduction to the island’s wines in Mystique’s remarkable old cave.

Wellness

Elios Spa feels entirely at home within the architecture, using cave like spaces and natural materials to create an intimate sanctuary within the cliff. Treatments combine contemporary wellness with traditional techniques, complemented by a hammam, sauna and hot tub for a deeper sense of relaxation.

There is also a fitness centre for more energetic mornings, although Santorini itself provides some compelling alternatives. Walking the caldera path before the heat builds and returning to Mystique for a swim and a long breakfast is a particularly fine way to begin the day.

Where

Oia is close enough to become part of the experience whenever you choose, from early morning walks through its almost empty lanes to evenings among its restaurants and little boutiques. The pleasure is in returning afterwards, following Mystique’s cobbled pathways back down the cliff until the village disappears and the caldera once again fills the view.
