The building has a story worth telling. Designed by Greek architect George Greca for the Italian landowner Matias Barabino, the mansion still bears Barabino’s initials and its date of construction on the balcony, while elaborate ceilings painted by Italian artists reveal the ambition of the original house. Its restoration has treated these details as an essential part of the hotel, allowing the architecture to retain its presence rather than simply providing a historic shell.

Inside, the character shifts beautifully between nineteenth century Ermoupoli and contemporary design. High ceilings, decorative floors, original paintings and grand proportions sit alongside elegant modern furniture and carefully considered lighting. Aithrio, the internal courtyard, opens the house to the Syros sunshine, while terraces and lounges provide smaller spaces to retreat to throughout the day.

With only nine rooms and suites, the original mansion continues to dictate the shape and personality of the accommodation. The Classic and Signature Rooms make excellent use of the building’s height and architectural detail, with restored features giving each space a character that could never be reproduced in a newly built hotel.

The Honeymoon Suite brings a more romantic interpretation, while the Castro Prestige Suite offers the most generous expression of the house, combining additional space with the sense of occasion that comes naturally to such an impressive historic setting.

Throughout the rooms, contemporary bathrooms, refined furnishings and thoughtful comforts have been introduced with a light touch. The result feels polished without obscuring the features that matter most: the ceilings, proportions, craftsmanship and unmistakable atmosphere of the original residence.

Dining

Food and drink form an enjoyable part of the hotel’s life in Ermoupoli. Aithrio makes particularly good use of the courtyard, providing an atmospheric open air setting for breakfast and leisurely daytime dining when the weather is warm.

Ousyra Restaurant brings a further dining option to the hotel, while drinks can be enjoyed in the bar, lounge or out on the terrace. The intimate scale suits Ermoupoli beautifully, where some of Syros’ most appealing restaurants and cafés are also waiting just beyond the door.

Wine has its own place in the story through Cellar 1857, conceived around the heritage of the building and adding another layer to evenings spent at Castro before stepping out into the surrounding streets of the island capital.
