Our View

Few resorts have their own personality in the way Huvafen Fushi does, and we still think the underwater spa and intimate island setting make it one of the Maldives' most memorable stays.

Huvafen Fushi, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World in the North Malé Atoll, is one of the Maldives' most distinctive private island retreats, known for pioneering the world's first underwater spa and for a level of privacy rarely found so close to Malé.

With just 44 beach and overwater bungalows spread across a small coral island, Huvafen Fushi feels intimate from the outset. Pathways wind through tropical vegetation towards quiet stretches of sand, while timber walkways extend across the lagoon to a collection of overwater villas positioned for uninterrupted ocean views. The scale of the resort is one of its greatest strengths, creating an atmosphere that feels calm, discreet and highly personal, with service centred around individual experiences rather than large resort operations.

The island has long appealed to guests looking for a more contemporary interpretation of the Maldives. There is a strong emphasis on privacy, space and thoughtful design, yet the overall feeling remains relaxed and unpretentious. From sunrise over the lagoon to evenings beneath the stars, the focus remains firmly on the natural beauty of the setting.

Staying

Accommodation is divided between Beach Bungalows tucked behind the shoreline and Overwater Bungalows extending across the lagoon. Every category includes a private plunge pool and generous outdoor living space, allowing guests to spend much of their stay outdoors while maintaining complete privacy.

The Lagoon Bungalows provide direct access to the water below, while the Ocean Bungalows enjoy wider sea views and a greater sense of seclusion. Larger options such as the Two Bedroom Beach House, Two Bedroom Ocean Pavilions and Three Bedroom Beach Pavilion offer substantial indoor and outdoor space, making them well suited to longer stays or small groups travelling together. Throughout the accommodation, the emphasis is on space, light and a strong connection to the surrounding ocean.

Dining is spread across four restaurants, each bringing a distinct character to the island. Celsius serves international cuisine in a relaxed beachfront setting, while Salt focuses on Japanese inspired dining above the lagoon. Raw introduces a lighter approach with wellness focused menus and fresh ingredients, while Forno specialises in wood fired pizzas and Mediterranean favourites.

Umbar acts as the island's social hub for cocktails and light dining throughout the day, while the sunset deck provides one of the most sought after spots on the island as the sky changes colour across the lagoon. Private beach dinners, in villa dining and tailored culinary experiences add further depth to the resort's dining programme.

Experience

The house reef lies just 25 metres from shore and is widely regarded as one of the strongest reefs in the North Malé Atoll. Snorkelling can be enjoyed directly from the beach, while the resident PADI dive team provides access to numerous dive sites within easy reach of the island. Deep sea fishing, sunset cruises, windsurfing, kayaking and other watersports offer plenty of opportunities to spend time on the water.

Back on land, guests can relax beside the infinity pool, take part in yoga sessions above the lagoon or make use of the overwater fitness centre. Life here tends to move at an easy pace, shaped by the rhythm of the ocean rather than organised schedules.

Wellness

LIME Spa remains one of the defining features of Huvafen Fushi. Located eight metres below sea level, its underwater treatment rooms look directly onto the reef, creating a setting unlike any other spa in the Maldives. Treatments range from restorative massages to advanced wellness therapies, while relaxation spaces, yoga sessions and the overwater gym complement the wider wellbeing offering.

The combination of innovative wellness facilities and the island's naturally peaceful atmosphere gives Huvafen Fushi a character that remains distinctive more than a decade after opening.

Where

Located in the North Malé Atoll, Huvafen Fushi is reached by speedboat in around 30 minutes from Velana International Airport. Its proximity to the capital makes it one of the easiest luxury island resorts to reach, allowing guests to spend more time enjoying the island and less time travelling.
