Soneva Fushi remains one of the most extraordinary resorts we have experienced in the Maldives, not because it tries to impress at every turn, but because nowhere else captures the same sense of space, imagination and connection to the island itself.
Soneva Fushi is the resort that redefined luxury in the Maldives, occupying one of the largest islands in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve where dense jungle, vast beaches and a remarkable natural setting create an experience unlike anywhere else in the archipelago.
When Soneva Fushi opened in 1995 it introduced a completely different vision of Maldivian hospitality, replacing polished formality with space, privacy and a closer connection to nature. That philosophy still defines the island today. Paths weave through thick tropical vegetation, bicycles replace buggies for many guests and the scale of the island allows entire stretches of beach to feel almost untouched. Despite its global reputation, there is very little that feels manufactured about the experience.
The resort has evolved significantly over the years, yet it remains faithful to the character that made it famous. Sustainability is embedded throughout the operation, from conservation initiatives and recycling programmes to the island's own glass studio and long standing environmental projects. The result is a resort with genuine substance behind the luxury.
The accommodation is amongst the most spacious in the Maldives. Sixty four beach villas are hidden within the island's vegetation, often entirely concealed from neighbouring residences, while the eight Water Reserves extend across the lagoon and rank amongst the largest overwater villas anywhere in the world.
Accommodation ranges from expansive Crusoe Suites with Pool to extraordinary multi bedroom residences and Water Retreats with slides leading directly into the lagoon. Outdoor living plays a central role throughout, with large private gardens, open air bathrooms, generous terraces and private pools creating spaces that feel more like secluded island homes than traditional resort villas.
Dining is one of the defining features of a stay at Soneva Fushi. Guests have access to a collection of restaurants and experiences that extend far beyond the expectations of a private island resort. Mihiree Mitha remains the social heart of the island, while Fresh in the Garden sits above the organic gardens and focuses on produce harvested steps from the kitchen.
Down to Earth by Ravi brings together flavours from across Asia and beyond, while Out of the Blue houses multiple dining concepts within a striking overwater setting. Elsewhere, guests can experience So Bespoke, Out of the Sea, Shades of Green, Flying Sauces Zipline Dining and Once Upon a Table. The island's much loved So Guilty and So Cool venues have become attractions in their own right, serving chocolates, desserts and an extraordinary range of homemade ice creams available throughout the day.
Life here centres on exploration. The house reef and surrounding waters provide excellent snorkelling and diving, with regular sightings of turtles, reef sharks, rays and seasonal manta rays within the wider biosphere reserve. The Soleni Dive Centre offers access to some of the Maldives' most rewarding marine environments, while kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing and surfing provide countless ways to experience the atoll.
Away from the water, guests can watch films beneath the stars at Cinema Paradiso, join astronomy sessions at the observatory, learn glassblowing at the island's renowned studio or spend an evening on a private sandbank. Families are equally well catered for, with The Den regarded as one of the most impressive children's facilities anywhere in the Indian Ocean.
Soneva Soul brings together wellness, fitness and preventative health within a programme that extends well beyond traditional spa treatments. Facilities include treatment villas, wellness consultations, movement sessions, yoga, fitness training and therapies inspired by both modern science and ancient healing traditions. The setting, hidden amongst the island's vegetation, reinforces the feeling of retreat and privacy that runs throughout the resort.
Located within the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Soneva Fushi is reached by a seaplane flight of approximately 30 minutes from Malé. Its position places guests within one of the Maldives' most ecologically important marine regions, renowned for exceptional snorkelling, diving and seasonal manta ray encounters.
