Our View

There is simply nothing quite like arriving at Soneva Jani for the first time, and even after seeing many of the Maldives' finest resorts, the scale of the lagoon and the sense of freedom here remain unforgettable.

Soneva Jani occupies an immense lagoon in Noonu Atoll where vast overwater villas, remarkable space and a strong sense of imagination have created one of the most recognisable resort experiences in the Maldives.

Everything at Soneva Jani is built around the scale of its setting. The resort stretches across a 5.6 kilometre lagoon of shifting blues, with long wooden walkways extending far into open water and very little visible beyond the horizon. The main hub, known as The Gathering, rises above the lagoon as the social and culinary heart of the resort, bringing together dining, wellness, recreation and the observatory in one striking overwater complex.

While undeniably ambitious in scale, Soneva Jani retains the relaxed philosophy that defines the wider Soneva brand. Shoes are largely forgotten, service feels personal rather than formal and sustainability sits at the centre of the operation. The result is a resort that feels both playful and sophisticated, with experiences that encourage guests to engage with the natural environment rather than simply observe it.

Staying

The accommodation is amongst the most impressive in the Indian Ocean. Fifty one overwater villas and eight island residences are positioned to maximise privacy and uninterrupted views across the lagoon. Many have become icons of Maldivian luxury, particularly the Water Retreats and Water Reserves with their retractable bedroom roofs and slides descending directly into the water below.

Space is a defining feature throughout. Large pools, extensive outdoor decks, private wine cellars, open air bathrooms and generous living areas give the villas a residential feel, while the larger multi bedroom retreats rank amongst the most substantial accommodation options available anywhere in the Maldives. Whether positioned above the lagoon or hidden amongst island vegetation, each villa is designed to make the surrounding landscape part of the experience.

Dining is centred around The Gathering and a collection of restaurants that bring genuine variety to longer stays. Down to Earth serves international dishes throughout the day, while So Wild focuses on plant based cooking and seasonal ingredients. Crab Shack remains one of the resort's most sought after lunch venues, pairing fresh seafood with a spectacular lagoon setting.

The Director's Cut combines Japanese inspired cuisine with the resort's overwater silent cinema, while Overseas by Mathias Dahlgren brings a more refined dining experience. Elsewhere, So Primitive offers open fire cooking and North Beach provides a relaxed setting by the water. Guests also have access to the celebrated chocolate room, cheese room and ice cream parlour, features that have become synonymous with a stay at Soneva Jani.

Experience

The lagoon itself shapes much of daily life. Snorkelling, diving, sailing, paddleboarding and windsurfing all take place within easy reach of the villas, while excursions explore the wider atoll's reefs, sandbanks and marine life. The dive centre offers access to some of the region's most rewarding underwater sites, with turtles, rays and reef life regularly encountered.

Beyond the water, guests can enjoy tennis, cycling, open air cinema screenings, astronomy sessions at the observatory and conservation focused activities including coral restoration projects. The combination of recreation, education and exploration gives the resort a character that extends far beyond traditional beach and pool days.

Wellness

Soneva Soul brings together wellness, movement and preventative health within a setting that mirrors the resort's wider philosophy. Facilities include treatment suites, yoga spaces, fitness facilities, wellness consultations and tailored therapies designed around individual needs. The spa's position above the lagoon reinforces the sense of calm that defines the wider resort.

Where

Soneva Jani is located in Noonu Atoll and can be reached by a seaplane flight of approximately 40 minutes from Malé. Its position within a vast private lagoon delivers a level of space and seclusion rarely found elsewhere in the Maldives, while still offering straightforward access from the international airport.
