The Residence Maldives at Dhigurah feels like two exceptional resorts in one, and we particularly love the freedom of crossing the bridge at sunset to discover an entirely different side of the experience.
The Residence Maldives at Dhigurah occupies a two kilometre island in the remote Gaafu Alifu Atoll where a private bridge links two resorts, creating one of the most expansive and varied island experiences in the Maldives.
Scale is one of the defining features here. Dhigurah itself is lined with long stretches of white sand and shaded by thousands of coconut palms, while the one kilometre bridge connecting the island to neighbouring Falhumaafushi opens up an entirely different dimension to the stay. Guests are not limited to a single island or a single collection of facilities. Instead, the resort functions as a connected destination with the freedom to move between two distinct settings whilst remaining within the same resort experience.
The atmosphere is relaxed and understated, with a style that favours space, natural surroundings and a strong connection to the landscape. Rather than focusing attention on a single focal point, the resort encourages exploration, whether that is cycling between islands, discovering different beaches or moving between restaurants and facilities spread across the two resorts.
The 173 villas are positioned across the beach, lagoon and overwater settings, with every category benefitting from a private pool and generous outdoor living space. Beach villas enjoy direct access to wide sandy shores, while lagoon and water villas extend over clear turquoise waters with uninterrupted views across the atoll.
The larger two bedroom villas are particularly impressive, offering substantial indoor and outdoor space for families or longer stays. Throughout the accommodation, the emphasis is on comfort, privacy and making the most of the natural surroundings, with sunrise and sunset positions providing distinctly different perspectives of the island.
One of the strongest aspects of a stay at Dhigurah is the breadth of dining available across both islands. Guests have access to nine restaurants and six bars, creating a level of variety rarely found outside the largest Maldivian resorts. The Dining Room serves international cuisine throughout the day, while Li Bai specialises in Cantonese dishes and remains one of the standout dining venues within the southern atolls.
Across the bridge, Café del Sol brings Mediterranean flavours to The Beach Club, Falhumaa occupies a spectacular overwater setting at the end of a long jetty, and The Sunset Grill focuses on grilled meats and seafood overlooking the lagoon. Together with the various bars and lounges spread between the islands, the dining experience feels varied enough to comfortably support even extended stays.
Gaafu Alifu Atoll is widely regarded as one of the Maldives' finest diving regions and the resort makes full use of its location. The PADI dive centre provides access to reefs known for strong coral growth, reef sharks, turtles and larger pelagic species, while snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing offer more relaxed ways to experience the surrounding waters.
On land, guests can join cooking classes using produce harvested from the Earth Basket garden, take part in floating fitness sessions, cycle between the two islands or simply enjoy the extensive beaches that stretch along both resorts. Sunset cruises aboard a traditional dhoni remain one of the most memorable experiences, particularly when dolphins appear alongside the boat as daylight fades.
The Spa by Clarins is positioned above the lagoon and includes ten overwater treatment pavilions, a yoga pavilion, fitness centre, beauty salon and nail spa. Treatments draw on both Clarins expertise and holistic wellness traditions, creating a comprehensive spa experience that matches the scale and ambition of the wider resort.
The Residence Maldives at Dhigurah is located in Gaafu Alifu Atoll and is reached via a domestic flight to Kooddoo Airport followed by a short speedboat transfer. Its remote southern location places guests within one of the Maldives' most rewarding diving regions whilst delivering a greater sense of seclusion than many resorts closer to Malé.
