There is something wonderfully timeless about Veligandu, and its beautiful sandbank, warm atmosphere and adults only setting make it a resort we would happily recommend for a special Maldives escape.
Veligandu Maldives Resort Island in North Ari Atoll is one of the Maldives' classic adults only escapes, celebrated for its remarkable sandbank, intimate scale and long standing reputation for romance.
Life on Veligandu revolves around the shape of the island itself. A broad sweep of white sand extends into the lagoon, creating one of the most recognisable sandbanks in the Maldives and giving the resort a sense of space that belies its modest footprint. Paths weave through mature tropical vegetation before opening onto beaches, jetties and quiet corners of the shoreline, while the lagoon shifts through shades of turquoise and deep blue throughout the day.
Unlike larger resorts that can feel spread across several islands or extensive developments, Veligandu remains focused on the simple pleasures of island life. The atmosphere is relaxed and grown up, with a pace that naturally encourages long lunches, afternoons by the water and evenings spent watching the sun disappear beyond the horizon.
The resort's 100 villas are positioned either along the beach or above the lagoon, allowing guests to choose between direct access to the sand or uninterrupted ocean views. Beach Villas sit amongst palms close to the shoreline, while Jacuzzi Beach Villas and Sunset Jacuzzi Beach Villas introduce larger outdoor living areas and private whirlpools just steps from the sea.
Over the water, Ocean Jacuzzi Villas, Ocean Pool Villas and Sunset Ocean Pool Villas offer a more immersive connection with the lagoon. The premium pool villa categories provide generous decks, private pools and wide open views across the atoll, while the two bedroom pool villas create a particularly appealing option for couples travelling together or those seeking additional space during a longer stay.
Dining centres around two restaurants and two bars, each taking advantage of the island's position within the lagoon. Dhonveli Restaurant serves international cuisine and themed evenings in an open sided setting close to the beach, while Madivaru provides a more intimate overwater dining experience with a menu focused on fresh seafood and regional flavours.
Thundi Bar sits beside the beach and acts as the social heart of the island throughout the day, while Athiri Bar extends over the lagoon, providing a quieter setting for sunset drinks and evening cocktails. Together they create a dining and drinking scene that feels varied without becoming overly formal.
The lagoon and nearby reefs naturally shape much of the experience. Snorkelling and diving are among the island's strongest attractions, with the PADI dive centre arranging trips throughout North Ari Atoll, an area well known for its marine life. Kayaking, windsurfing and other watersports are available for guests looking to spend more time on the water.
Back on land, the resort maintains a relaxed rhythm centred around the beach, pool and lagoon. Sunset cruises, private dining experiences and excursions to nearby sandbanks are particularly popular, while the island's compact size means everything remains within a short walk of the villas.
Araamu Spa occupies a series of treatment rooms positioned above the water, providing a peaceful setting for massages, body treatments and wellness rituals. The spa is complemented by a fitness centre, yoga sessions and dedicated relaxation areas overlooking the lagoon.
Veligandu is reached by a scenic 20 minute seaplane transfer from Velana International Airport. Its location within North Ari Atoll places guests close to some of the Maldives' best known dive sites while retaining the privacy and exclusivity of a single resort island.
